Lawyer of the Day


The Barnstable County Bar Association is able to offer free legal advice in family law-related matters through our Lawyer of the Day program. The Lawyer of the Day supports the Barnstable County Probate and Family Court.

This program is limited to handling issues like Guardianships, Adoptions, Matrimonial, Trusts and Estates, Probate and the like.

The Lawyer of the Day DOES NOT assist on matters relating to housing, landlord-tenant, consumer complaints, unemployment insurance or Social Security. If you have a legal problem in one of these areas, the Lawyer of the Day will not be able to help you.

In Probate and Family Law matters, the Lawyer of the Day can assist in handling paperwork and can provide counseling on certain procedures. At the present time, interactions with the Lawyer of the Day are done by telephone or Zoom meeting. Typically, this service is available weekdays from 9-11 a.m. and again from 2:15 to 3:30 p.m. Typically, this service is available weekdays from 9 a.m. -2:30 p.m.

To determine if you are eligible for Lawyer of the Day assistance, please contact the Barnstable County Probate and Family Court.

Be sure to check whether your issue falls into Group A or Group B.

Group A includes Divorce, Matrimonial, Child Custody, Guardianship, Probate, Adoption, Visitation, Estate, Will or Family Dispute.

Group B includes Unemployment, Social Security, Malpractice, Landlord/Tenant/Housing, Consumer Complaint Against a Business, Discrimination, Harassment, Problem with Town or Neighbors, Real Estate/Zoning, Criminal or Jail Inmate-related, Personal Injury or other issue not included in Group A.

The Lawyer of the Day does not service Group B cases! If your case does not involve the matters itemized  in Group A above, you may be a candidate for our Legal Referral Service, where we will recommend a lawyer that you can hire for a fee. There may also be low-cost or no-cost legal resources for Group B cases.
