Lawyer of the Day
The Barnstable County Bar Association offers multiple Lawyer of the Day programs
Our original program with the Barnstable County Probate and Family Court, Nantucket Probate and Family Court, and the Dukes County Probate and Family Court, plus our newest program with the Southeast Housing Court – Barnstable Session.
The Probate and Family Court program is limited to handling issues like guardianships, divorce, custody, child support, parentage, and related matters. In probate and family law matters, the Lawyer of the Day can assist in handling paperwork and can provide counseling on certain procedures. These attorneys do NOT appear with you for court hearings. At the present time, interactions with the Lawyer of the Day are done by telephone.
To determine whether you are eligible for the Probate and Family Court Lawyer of the Day program, please contact the Barnstable, Nantucket or Dukes County courts and they will provide you with additional information. If you are eligible, your contact information will be provided to the volunteer attorney who is next scheduled for the Lawyer of the Day program and that attorney will reach out to you by phone.
The Barnstable County Bar Association has also established a Lawyer of the Day program with the Southeast Housing Court and South Coastal County Legal Services. Volunteer attorneys provide advice and counsel on various landlord-tenant matters. This program is available on Wednesdays at the Barnstable session of the Southeast Housing Court.
The Lawyer of the Day DOES NOT assist on matters relating to consumer complaints, unemployment insurance, or Social Security. If you have a legal problem in one of these areas, the Lawyer of the Day will not be able to help you.
In no circumstance does the Lawyer of the Day programs establish attorney representation beyond the brief interaction through the program; however, the attorney does have a duty to maintain confidentiality regarding the matters discussed.
Additional no-cost or low-cost legal information is available through the Legal Resources page.
